Thanksgiving Gift Guide 2014

Thanksgiving is coming our way! On most holidays, food is important, but only secondary to the celebration. For this one, food is central to your table. At Central Farm Markets, we want to make sure that you are adequately prepared for the upcoming feast with your family and friends. That’s why we’ve planned to hold a special market the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Many of our vendors will be joining us at the Pike Central location from 10am to 2pm to provide you with the freshest ingredients and the perfect host/hostess gifts. Here is a short list of what we will have to offer you at this very special market:

Wollam Pumpkin Bouquet

Wollam Gardens – a “destination flower farm” in Jeffersonton, VA – will sell their beautiful Pumpkin Bouquets, a wonderful piece for your Thanksgiving table. They will also have hand-crafted wreaths made from dried flowers – a great gift that will stay beautiful long after your guests have left.

Affinity 2

Affinity Woodworks will sell one-of-a-kind wood pieces at a discounted price. All wooden bowls are 10% off and all cutting boards are 15% off. Both of these items would make fabulous gifts for friends or family or as a great addition to your own Thanksgiving table. Pearl Tea-Infusions (1)

Pearl Fine Teas is a great place to pick up some gifts for your host or to pick out some tea to serve to your guests! Elise has prepared different types of tea-infused preserves, including Strawberry Assam Preserve, Blueberry Jasmine Green Tea Preserve, Earl Grey Nectarine Preserve and SourCherry Sencha. She will also bring her delicious mini tea-cakes and her new market hit, Jasmine Green Tea Applesauce – made with apples from Toigo Orchards! These will make great additions to your table!

Two Acre Farm, located in Keymar, MD, specializes in all-natural preserves, sauces, condiments and more. For our Thanksgiving market, Nicole – a self-proclaimed “Artisan Agriculturalist”- will bring her one-of-a-kind Cranberry Sauce with Port Wine and Cinnamon, Mulling Spices for delicious cider and her famous Spiced Turkey Brine. Other goodies at Two Acre Farm worth a mention are Cranberry Vinaigrette, Cranberry Pepper Jam, Wild Rice Stuffing with Apples and Pecans, and Cracked Black Pepper Gravy. This is literally a one-stop shop for gifts and food items to help you complete your menu!

All Things Olive

All Things Olive, the market’s supplier of a range of delicious, high-quality olive oils, have perfect gift-sized bottles in all flavors for you to cook with or give as gifts to your host/hostess. The couple that runs the stand, Lynn and Keith Voight, can help you find the best type of oil for whatever you might need. From buttery and bold to delicate and fruity oils, All Things Olive has it all.

Chocotenango will have a great assortment of delicious chocolates for you to share with your guests or your hosts. They sell both bars and filled chocolates, as well as a wonderful gift – a tin of spiced hot chocolate mix, perfect for serving after the feast. If you’re looking for a great gift to go with a bottle of wine, look no further! Chocotenango sells boxes of chocolate that hang from a wine bottle’s neck – and you can pick the chocolate flavors that go with it!

The Chocolatier’s Palette is offering Thanksgiving flavors in decadent Belgian chocolate. Their chocolate is dual-use at the holidays!  The two-piece boxes are great for place settings; the five-piece boxes are perfect for thanking those who helped prepare the meal; and the twelve-piece box is a wonderful thank you to the host/hostess! Come taste a variety of flavors, from favorites like “pumpkin pie”, “sweet potato casserole”, and “cranberry sauce” to the more daring menu items: “turkey (jerky)” and “green bean casserole!” Twelve flavors in all—perfect for that 12-piece box!

Gift Certificate

Central Farm Markets also has gift certificates available. You can purchase them at the info at all markets this weekend. After the markets close you can get them at Bethesda throughout the holiday season or e-mail Debbie Moser and she will send them to you. These make great host/hostess gifts as well as a perfect holiday present/stocking stuffer for anyone on your list.

The Pure Pasty Co.

Traditional Beef

If you are not a pastry chef or connoisseur, you are probably unfamiliar with the savory delicacies The Pure Pasty Co. in Vienna, VA offers. The Pure Pasty Co.’s traditional Cornish pastries are usually associated with Cornwall, UK.

So what is this latest British invasion sensation called a Pasty? It is a savory dish made by placing a filling – traditionally meat and vegetables – on a flat pastry circle, folding it over on itself, and crimping the edges in a braid-like fashion to form a seal. After baking, the result is a semi-circle of yummy goodness, perfect for eating on the go or sitting and enjoying with a cup of tea.

Before bringing them to the US, founder Michael Burgess took note of the booming demand of this food-to-go market and thought, “there were no British pies or pasties in the U.S.!” Burgess saw this gap in the market across the pond from his home in England, and with no baking experience to speak of, he began to bake and craft these delicious pasties at home, driven by a passion characteristic of all his previous ventures.

5 years ago, Michael moved to the U.S. After a challenging year, he opened The Pure Pasty Co. with the talented Nicola Willis-Jones as head chef. Claiming that her passion is putting “everything in a pasty,” she has worked hard on doing just that with delicious and unique results!

Regular favorites that are offered include Traditional (ground beef, potato, onion, carrot, etc.), Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken Masala and Moroccan Lamb. In addition, they always have a rotating vegetable option and a Chef’s Special. Previous specials have included Peanut Chicken, Thai Lamb Pie, Philly Cheesesteak and Spinach & Feta. Chef Nicola also rotates desserts every few weeks, sticking mainly to traditional tastes like Strawberry Rhubarb, Peaches & Cream and Treacle Tart. All of the ingredients are sourced as locally and as fresh as possible; organic flour and shortening, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, local berries and sustainable Palm Oil can be found in the pantry of their in their open-concept kitchen. If you come to their store to buy a pasty they will invite you to watch them work!

The Pure Pasty Co. joined Mosaic Central Farm Market this year and was an immediate hit. They are looking forward to opening another storefront in the near future. Come stop by The Pure Pasty Co. stand at Mosaic. Every week they have both hot and ready-to-eat pasties, as well as cold ones you can take home with you to reheat and serve later! If you haven’t tried one yet, you are in for a real treat!
